Lake Powell vacation 2019

When we get a chance to get a common consensus about a vacation destination, it is always super easy.  We go to Lake Powell on a houseboat with a couple of speed boats and all the family we can gather.  It is such a fun time for everyone -young and old.  We swim, fish, boat, canoe, float, get dragged behind a boat on a tube or skis or knee board or wake board

Early mornings are peaceful and calm and oh so beautiful.  Because the pictures came on in random order, I'll just tell you a little about what you might see and what it is like for us.  We spent Tuesday through Saturday at the Lake.  Isaac brought Kianna and William brought his father.  The rest were my own posterity but missing Dane, Erica and Terry in Tennessee.  We keep things simple and each prepare a couple of meals for the group. The water and boats are the main entertainment but Elise also brought embroidery floss to make bracelets and anklets. Reading, napping, playing games and snacking are also popular activities.
The last night we have a dance on the lower deck while all the little ones are sleeping.  Isaac and Kianna decorated with beach towels and candles to keep the bugs away and Isaac brought the music.  We had fun dancing and ended it all with leg wrestling.  It was so fun.  Apparently Emily and Rachel are the champions for this year but there may be some challenge rounds ahead.

Each night a family took their turn for a family devotional.  We enjoyed discussion about The Family, a Proclamation, Come Follow Me lessons and conference talks.  This may have been one of my favorit things to do as a family as testimonies were shared and then we knelt together in family prayer.

A rainbow for me

I enjoyed a walk this morning with one of my very best friends.  We like walking early (6:10) and seeing the sun rise. This morning we got sprinkled on just a little bit.  The clouds were beautiful as the sun peaked over the mountains.  But then we turned west and found just a sliver of a rainbow. As we continued walking we  got to watch the rainbow get brighter and finally full and a second rainbow much dimmer seemed to follow its lead.  It was so beautiful.  I love rainbows. I think of God's promises and beauty after storms and hope.

As we walked I was convinced that the end of the rainbow was on Laurie's house. Her home was the pot of gold, the treasure at the end of the rainbow.  It was fun to imagine.  As we continued to walk it seemed like the rainbow moved its standing in the sky.  Different parts took their turn shining and then it all slowly faded, almost without seeing it go, just like it had come.  Stealing in and brightening our morning, our whole day if we chose to see it.

I think its interesting that rainbows are always a happy surprise.  I am sure there are predictable conditions that would help a person expect a rainbow but for me they are always a happy surprise. Perspective is an important part of my rainbow experience.  If I stay in one place then I am certain of where the rainbow starts and ends. I can see it for myself.  If I keep moving, its as if the rainbow has moved-adjusting so that I am sure it is in a new place.  Its like so many things in our experiences.  As we move (learn, grow, experience life) our perspective changes, our view changes.  What we were once so sure of now has another level of understanding and wonder. There is still beauty and goodness, color and promise but we come to understand a little more of what truth really is. And sometimes if we are just willing to see things in different ways it doesn't change the truth of an experience but allows us to see from a new side and gain new understanding, new perspective.

This seems especially true with relationships.  We think we understand a person and their reasons for what they do.  This summer we had some youth stay with us.  One of them took ridiculously long showers.  In my home a long shower is considered selfish, inconsiderate, wasteful...  I saw others irritated with this person and expressing their opinions.  After a conversation with an adult who understood this girl I learned that she was struggling with some OCD that led her to have to wash and rinse extensively.  She tried to time her showers to be more thoughtful but it was amazing how just having a new perspective shed a new light on the whole attitude of everyone.  With a little attitude adjustment we were suddenly blessed with an ability to be patient.  So many times we just don't know what someone else is going through or why they don't think like we do.

I also see this with ourselves and the goals we are working on or the challenges we are trying to overcome.  Things can seem hard, overwhelming, impossible but if we can look from a different angle or even just close our eyes and take that first step then the impossible begins to happen and becomes manageable, step by step.

Us! uncombed, clean faced, morning breath, all natural look and finding beauty and joy.

I choose wife and mother.

We went to see Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella at the Hale Center Theater.  We love going to this theater where top quality performances with family values are always well done, amazing and fun.  It is a theater I would recommend to everyone.

http://story-monster.com/2015/09/cinderella-and-the-prince/

My disappointment came with the 'updates' that have been added to this classic story.  Because we are not suppose to think that a young girl should have plans that include ambitions of marriage and family, that a prince would not want to rescue such a simple girl or that she should hope for a good man that wants to take care of her and her take care of him and they have a family together, they have adjusted the story.  The idea that traditional roles are not valued or desired but put upon us by society, they changed the story.  They made the prince a man who was given something to do that came easy and sounded good but was more of a distraction because he was dumb and not capable of running the kingdom or recognizing the evil of another man that wanted the power.  Therefore men are dumb or evil and power hungry.  Then there is Cinderella who has a noble agenda that she introduces to the prince so that he will do something good and claim his position again.  She uses him to achieve her goals so now they can be happy together.  She is even the one to plan out the idea of a lost shoe so he could search for her.

I started listening to a book called The Burnout Cure for helping Mormon women who realize that motherhood is hard.  She begins by speaking of her mother who married at 19 before she had a chance to know who she was or what she wanted in life.  I find this so insulting.  As if a 19 yo woman can't possible know what she wants and obviously if she did, she would not have chosen to marry and have a family. Choosing to be a wife and mother is not the end of growth and development. It is the beginning of an amazing and rewarding path of growth, challenge, opportunity to love and serve and add value to the world and especially to the people you care most about.

Emily is a young mother of 2 daughters ages 3 and 1 that I recently visited with.  She is at home with her girls. She didn't get married until after she had her masters degree.  At that point she married and together they have chosen to have her at home to raise their children.  Still she wonders at times if she is doing what is best with her life. She has professional training that would be valued in the world and she could be paid well for it.  Instead they are making due on one income and things are tight.  The world, including some with the best of intentions, are suggesting that she settled and should do something more with her life. Surely she cannot find fulfillment or accomplish her dreams by being a wife and mother.

I find all of these examples frustrating in their limited understanding, lack of value of family, lack of belief in traditional roles and the ability to find fulfillment in raising a family and loving your spouse.

Burnout, exhaustion, doubts, levels of commitment to a chosen path are actually not symptoms of traditional roles only.  Anyone in any career path, life choice, relationship is going to have hard days, overwhelming challenges, highs and lows, feelings of not being appreciated as well as the rewarding moments when you experience joy, bliss, reward and accomplishment.  Anything worth doing takes effort, fortitude, energy, commitment, vision, goals.

I don't know why being a woman who chooses family is considered such an easy target for people planting doubt and belittling.  Wouldn't it be nice to support and value this essential and very hard role.  It is also not the end of growth and development.  I believe everything we bring to our family-our talents, interests, abilities and continued learning- add value to our family and the goodness that is family life as well as helping us grow and fulfill our dreams.

Wives and moms are the heroes of society the world over.  Every time we look down on the choice to be a stay at home mom we tear away at the foundation of society.  And what about men?  Let's value their choice to support a family, to work hard day after day.  What if we discouraged them? Told them they were wasting their gifts and talents by going to work every day and then giving all their earnings to support a family?  Think of the glamorous life they could have if they didn't tie themselves down to the traditional role of husband and father. Think of the shallow examples of those who do just that.

I believe that true joy comes in serving others.  I don't believe that if we lived all for our self actualization and fulfillment, always putting our dreams, our agenda first would make us happier.  I don't believe even the author referenced above's mother is regretting her choice to support and love her husband and have 9 children.  Was it easy? No. But which of the children does she wish were never born? Which of their life experiences would have  been guaranteed better if they had been born 10 years later? and had less siblings?

Each of us is given the responsibility as well as the gift to choose. Second guessing our choices is a waste of time.  We do our best when we make decisions. We do our best to thrive in those decisions and learn that every life experience will be half happy and half sad, half good and half hard.  There is oppositions in ALL things.  Stop doubting the value of traditional family and the joy that is a huge part of the sacrifice.

Let's support these women in the things they are able to do, help them where we can but never give them reasons to resent their choices or doubt the good they are adding to the world in a quiet way in the home just because it does not include a glamorous paycheck, nice wardrobe or travel benefits.

The benefits of being the best wife and mother you know how to be, of having the goal to keep getting better at it all the time, are immeasurable.  Even our mistakes along the way are still opportunities to learn, to seek help from God, to provide real life lessons for ourselves and our loved ones.  I know that God sees our heart.  As we seek his help and guidance, as we serve those he has blessed us with with a loving heart, what we accomplish is so much more than anything else the world would claim as adding value.

I know that as we set proper and good priorities, God uses us to add even more value to the world.  There are plenty of examples of wives and mothers accomplishing amazing and professional things.  I believe when we put our family first then the rest falls into place.  Because of our priority, we have perspective, experience, foundation that opens up doors in a most appropriate way.

We are not wasting our education, our talents, our time, our energy. We are spending it on those we value most. We are nurturing it and allowing it to grow in ourselves, in our families, in the community and in the world - one family at a time. I know for a fact that as we seek the Lord's direction in all that we do, He will multiply our abilities and our efforts and our influence.  Out of small and simply things comes that which is great because he touched us.  He gave us the plan of happiness. That plan is all about creating a family and raising that family.  He  gave us all that we have and are. The more we trust him, partner with him, follow his plan; the more we get to see miracles and be an integral part of those miracles.

I love the truths of phrases such as
- have courage and be kind
- In my own little corner I can be whatever I want to be
- impossible things are happening every day

The power of a mother's love is real.  Let it grow in you and share it.  As you do the best that you know how, you will be the mom each of your children need and in your own little corner you will be doing the impossible every day.

Though old, I like this version of Rodger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella. They search for each other, recognize good and the prince doesn't choose her because she is beautiful just on the outside but he looks to who she is inside.  She has courage and is kind.
And my kids grew up with this version
And we have enjoyed Disney's versions of Cinderella.

PS
I just listened to this great podcast "Choosing Deliberately" and loved it.  We don't need to judge other's paths or second guess our own.  We need to focus on our core value of following Jesus Christ and then let that journey or path be led by him, knowing that we are not after the accolades of the world but to be useful in building His kingdom in whatever way he wants to use the gifts and opportunities he has given us.

prosper

As I consider faith and answer to prayers.this morning I found great counsel in Mosiah 2
22 And behold, all that he arequires of you is to bkeep his commandments; and he has cpromised you that if ye would keep his commandments ye should prosper in the land; and he never doth dvary from that which he hath said; therefore, if ye do ekeep his fcommandments he doth bless you and prosper you.
So here is my 'a ha' for today.  When we are feeling like we are keeping his commandments and doing are best and have righteous desires we sometimes wonder where the blessings are that we are asking for.  I believe that he does bless and prosper us. So the doubt is not whether God keeps his promises, it is whether we are recognizing the blessings he is sending. He hears and answers our prayers.  He blesses us as we seek to do his will.  Always.  If we aren't seeing it, it is not because he didn't answer.  I want to pray to be able to recognize his way of blessing and prospering me and my family.  I trust that he is doing it in a way that is best for me.  I will be grateful even if I don't recognize the process.
23 And now, in the first place, he hath created you, and granted unto you your lives, for which ye are indebted unto him.
There is so much to be grateful for and all good things are of God. Counting blessings is essential to finding joy.
24 And secondly, he doth arequire that ye should do as he hath commanded you; for which if ye do, he doth immediately bbless you; and therefore he hath paid you. And ye are still indebted unto him, and are, and will be, forever and ever; therefore, of what have ye to boast?
Immediately?  Yes, Immediately! The blessings are there.  It may not be the way we want or the timing we want but there are immediate blessings and they are not hiding. They are exactly what we need from a loving father who knows how to give good gifts.  We just have to look and have eyes that see and ears that hear and a heart that understands.

Knoxville and meeting Terry

At just a month old, grandpa and Granny got to go all the way to Tennessee to meet this adorable new grandson...and I caught his smile in a picture :)
It almost turned to a laugh.  Dane and Erica have created a beautiful home in there new city.  He is providing for his sweet little family with a new job in data analysis and enjoying the company and the things he is learning.  She is a stay at home mom that finds joy in each little beauty of life and loves her sweet husband and son.  They have created a little heaven on earth.

We enjoyed a beautiful nature walk near their home. I love the beauty of east Tennesee.

We found our old home there on Pittman road. We drove up the drive. The current owners came out and the ended up inviting us in and giving us a tour.  It was surreal to be there and have memories flooding back but also to see that it was different, changed, improved and somebody else's home.  The have done some great improvements and love the home too.

Out for dinner at a restaurant on the river for catfish and pulled pork.  Delicious

We did the Cade's Cove loop and even found a bear up the tree.  Hard to see in this picture but not too far from us picture takers/

Yummy burgers at this joint where the owner is greeting and so friendly and they celebrate family and Christian values.

And the extra special opportunity to have grandpa help in Dane giving his first son a name and blessing.  We met the good people of their ward and also visited one of our old wards from 20 years ago where we still found a few familiar faces.

Another beautiful hike

Visiting Dane at his work place.  He is doing so great. They are doing so great with their sweet family.

Mission call received and accepted

This much anticipated and hoped for day finally came on April 23, 2019.  Isaac received his mission call in an email and of course we gathered friends and family to join him in opening the call and learning where he would be serving for 24 months and when.
He will be serving in the Michigan Lansing mission and entering the MTC on August 7.  He will be teaching in the English language.

This boy has some very proud parents.  We are so grateful for the growth and maturity we have witnessed up close as he has learned about faith, repentance, the atonement of Jesus Christ and we have watched as his love for the gospel has grown as well as his desire to share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Easter 2019

We began our Easter with an early morning walk. It is so fun to sit at the pioneer heritage park and watch the sunrise behind the temple.  Thinking about the Son of God who rose from the grave giving us the best gift ever. The gift of eternal life.

Daisy
That afternoon we enjoyed an Easter egg hunt.  Unfortunately the weather had not cooperated so we just moved the hunt indoors.

Our Easter feast shared with family reminds me that family is another gift from God for which I am so grateful.
