Tree is down

I took the tree down today.  I am usually anxious to get my house in order Christmas evening but we got busy and I finally got to it tonight. Strange thing is that I wasn't tired of it.  I feel like Christmas just kind of slipped in without a lot of effort or worry.  We enjoyed a picture perfect Christmas. things could not have gone better.  We made the most of those who were available and had a great time.  Everyone helped out. Parties came together with the help and support of all.  I didn't have time to get tired of Christmas music. We had plenty of treats that I didn't have to make.  Food, fun, family, and faith were the ingredients this year and I loved it.

Family Christmas parties

We enjoyed a just kids Christmas Party Friday night.  We had Cincinnati chili, original Grinch movie, Christmas stories  of  Snowmen at Night, and Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree. Decorating of mugs with permanent markers (we then bake them to set it), orange julius, and Arthur's Christmas movie.  It was a lot of fun.
The pictures came in an odd order and thats okay.

Sunday we enjoyed a special sacrament meeting and then a progressive dinner where we had appetizers at Peter and Rachel's, salad at Elise and John's, main dish at my house, and dessert at Porter's.  We walked from house to house. The kids had a new experience for dinner.  We then acted out the nativity, had each family do a talent, opened gifts and played games like Don't Break the Ice and Uno Attack.  It was a lot of fun for all.

Can I go back to college?

I have recently been feeling like I have fewer memories than other people.  I feel like I have been forgetting things that have happened - conversations, places I have been, what those places were like, people's names, certain words in the middle of a thought or sentence.

I have tried to ask questions, apologize, admit I don't remember if... It worries me a little.

I want to strengthen my brain, my thinking power, my cognitive skills.

I also just started PathwayConnect which is a way to go back to school and work towards a degree. It scares and challenges me.  I want to be a good learner and I don't want any of my effort to be wasted.

I am also working on my Personal Progress. Today I am working on Virtue 2 and am reading from John 14:

26 But the aComforterwhich is the bHoly Ghost, whom the Father will send in my cname, he shall dteach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
27 aPeace I leave with you, my bpeace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be ctroubled, neither let it be afraid.
HE will teach you all things.  If he is the teacher, I can learn. If he is teaching me all things, I can remember. If he is teaching me ALL things then that includes that which is needful at this time and I can trust him to help me.  He will not only teach me but he will help me remember when I need to have those pieces brought to my mind.

To me this brings great peace. I will choose not to be troubled or afraid but trust in the atonement of Jesus Christ, trust in the Holy Ghost as a member of the Godhead who is willing to be my constant companion. Who I can invite to be in my life always. Who I can learn the language of so that I can recognize his still small voice.

I will keep God's commandments. I will because I love him.  I will feel his love and goodness in my life.  He is always there for me. He will not leave me comfortless.

2 Nephi 32
aAngels speak by the power of the Holy Ghost; wherefore, they speak the words of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you, bfeast upon the cwords of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will dtell you all things what ye should do.
Angels. The words of Christ. The Holy Ghost.

Doctrine and Covenants 45
57 For they that are wise and have received the atruth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their bguide, and have not been deceived
I have received the truth. I can be wise. I have been blessed with the ability to discern truth and error.  What could be more important than this wisdom?

Doctrine and Covenants 121
45 Let thy abowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let bvirtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy cconfidence wax strong in the dpresence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the edews from heaven.
46 The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant acompanion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of brighteousness and truth; and thy cdominion shall be an everlasting dominion, and without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever and ever.
As I try to decide what to study and my why for beginning this journey of formal education, I pray that I may maintain a higher perspective, a proper why, so that I may be full of charity towards all and in my efforts to not complain, to be more positive (virtuous in my thoughts). As I make an effort and increase my desire I will gain the confidence that I need to be an instrument in God's hand. I can claim the blessings my Father in Heaven lovingly offers me.

I want to remember that I have felt inspired to begin this educational journey. I am seeking to be obedient, to focus my efforts, to learn to prioritize and choose that which is best for me at this time and to recognize my time multiplying that I may not neglect the good part.

She was joyful

The quote originally said she was joyful on the last line but I wanted something current, a present choice.

Sometimes I feel lonely, even in a crowd. Sometimes I think I want to just hide in my room until a party is over. Sometimes I am so easily embarrassed and afraid of what others might or are thinking.  I reach out, volunteer, plan things and then I get so very nervous.  I want to serve others and add value and, at other times, I want to move to a remote mountain cabin and live an isolated life.

Do others feel this way?
Am I an introvert?
Maybe.
Or is that just an excuse not to push my boundaries, boundaries that are not real. Are they simply thoughts that are not serving me?

Life can be confusing and it can be hard. There is also so much to life - so much beauty, opportunity, joy, love, adventure.  I don't want fear of the unknown to hold me back or keep me stuck. I don't want to fear failure. I don't want to live a boring life just to feel safe.  After all even boring is not safe.

I get anxious but I push through and find out I can survive.
I get scared but I can put one foot forward at a time, face the dragons, and I become braver.
I feel lonely. I fear people. I find a way to connect with a small group or even better one on one and we are both edified. I end up having fun. I end up creating memories that I cherish. I end up learning to laugh at myself, empathize with others, serve something greater than myself.  I learn to think of someone other than myself.  I learn to feel the discomfort and then move forward.

I got my first issue of Magnolia Journal inspiration for life and home and I am so pleased with the solid content I found.  So here I am trying to figure out feelings and discomfort and direction when I start reading this issue that happens to be "In Pursuit of Happiness Wholeness" and so many things start to bring a new view of life.  Just like the Japanese art of kintsugi where they repair broken pottery with gold. "Kintsugi refocuses our attention from what should have been toward creating something infinitely more beautiful with what remains, and perhaps far more honoring of who we were made to be all along." As with anything Chip and Johanna Gains do, there are beautiful ideas for the home, amazing and delicious food with recipes but there are also deep ideas, struggles, solutions and people.  They spotlighted several ordinary people that are finding wholeness.  Here are a few quotes from their articles.

Clint helps me understand that comparing never helps but accepting our own journey and what it makes us.
And the more I've learned about the brain the more I've realized that stress--no matter the circumstance--is stress, and our minds can't tell the difference.
I realized that we're all becoming something. We're in process always, and that's better than acceptable--it's how we were meant to be.
Maybe wholeness is the acceptance of brokenness. Once I'm OK with imperfection, that's when things totally change because I'm not trying to look different or feel different.
There's peace that I have now after doing the work and then just learning how to sit and be comfortable in the uncomfortable, believing that, day by day, I am being made whole.

Latasha taught me about being brave
...you never know what you don't know, so I went.
And I've found that when you get offended by something it's because you probably need to dig into it.
This is when you face it. This is when you know God is set ion getting your attention and no matter how much you want to put a few blinders up and move forward, there's work to do.
You never know what fears have crept into our hearts or what doubts have taken root. So we refuse to ignore the past or avoid potential pain. We step bravely into it. Because we have set ourselves in a new trajectory; to look the hard stuff in the face, to apologize with every bit of our hearts, and to let a covenant take its place.
Michelle taught me about disappointment, honesty and vulnerability
Even though it's been two decades, I still need to be OK with grieving. I still need to admit the hole in my heart. But that's not the end of my story.
I've learned to embrace and not withdraw, unless I need to set a boundary
I think this honest posture is why I'm in a good place.
All of us have broken parts, fragile parts but that is what adds beauty to life and a richness in our ability to connect with others.  Finding a way to embrace who we have been, who we are and who we want to be is part of that being perfect.  Being perfect to me is coming to mean being whole.  Accepting all of me, not just the confident or beautiful or ready to be seen parts but loving all of me and loving all of others too.

I loved this podcast by Terri Sevelle Foy .  She has been a recent find of mine and I love her attitude, love of God and confidence in hope.

Jody Moore has become a regular part of my listening habits so much so that the ideas she teaches are finally sinking in and I am learning to run models for my own situations.  As I have heard more and more about anxiety I have wondered if I have a problem.  I don't like being uncomfortable and there are too many times I wanted to use anxiety as an excuse to stay where I am.  This podcast rang true for me.  We do things even through the discomfort. It's part of living life and growing. Its part of being human and having a human experience.

So here I am with all these good sources, ideas and hopes. Now what?  Since our new 2 hour church schedule I have been missing connection.  I miss the sisterhood of Relief Society that we weren't even that good at.  I have every confidence that this change was inspired and I want to embrace it fully but I feel so disconnected, so alone.  I am trying to figure out a new way of connecting, of doing things. To find God's way for me. I know I need people. I know I am needed. I know that for things to change, I must change.  I want to be okay with the awkward beginnings of friendship, the need to be forgiven and to forgive along that path, the embarrassment of mistakes or letting someone else see a little bit more of who I am on the inside. I know it all could be painful. But with pain comes joy too.  The more I focus on seeing the good in others and in myself, the more I count blessings along the way, the painful things can take their proper place in my history adding depth to who I am. Maybe even adding gold.

I have kept these quotes from Ann Voskamp.  She has such a beautiful way with words, rephrasing in a way that creates an opportunity to think a little differently.
Hard things just keep calling you because you're meant to answer to higher and better things

You're meant to do hard and holy things because they are the next thing--to get to the best thing.

And perfect love says you don't have to show anyone up--you just have to show up.
Perfect love says you don't have to impress anyone--you just have to press on.
Perfect love says when you mess up--he'll carry you

Fire your perfectionism and your procrastination will quit too.

We may be growing older but our hearts are growing larger, and we may be limping along but we can help welcome a family into our family that longs to belong, we may be hurting in all kinds of ways, but we can be kind and help others hurting in their own way.
Getting to love makes you the luckiest of all, because love always wins.

And a few more random notes I want to remember

  • Review your patriarchal blessing
  • Different but better
  • I had to imagine myself not as the person I thought I was, and not as the person I believed others pictured me to be, but as the person that I wanted to be.
  •  Our views of others are a direct result of how we feel about ourselves. Once we fill our minds with positive thoughts about ourselves, we will be able to more clearly see the good in those around us. Give others the benefit of the doubt and allow them to shine. Be slow to judge. Give others a chance to excel. We never know what greatness is hidden behind our short-sighted views.
  • H.W.L.F. He would love first.
As I learn from all these amazing people and resources my goal is to truly be joyful in any circumstance, having a perspective that is filled with love and trust of God and my earthly experience.

Wood Badge

I enjoyed my last Wood Badge as an assistant scribe. I worried. I dreaded. I made fun of the opportunity. I ended up having to miss the first 2 days to get my son to the MTC and then I went. I decided to be present, look for opportunities to be helpful and to connect and wear a full scout uniform.

I got there feeling a little like an outsider and my emotions were tender having just said good bye to Isaac for 2 years.  I finally got a cabin and loved having it all to myself.  I quickly learned that I was surrounded by great people and had an opportunity to have a great review on amazing leadership principles and practices.  I had a front row seat to people creating teams, cheering each other on, having honest conversations and thinking shifts, as well as some really good clean fun, crazy scout songs and budding friendships.
And it was so beautiful.  I love the setting that we got to enjoy.  We had rain and sun and warm and cold. Mountain smells and wildlife.  I don't believe that I was really needed or did much but I tried to bring value to the experience.
The view from our dining porch
I am guessing that it was for me to face my fears, do something on my own, make new friends, stretch a little and trust that saying yes and giving is the right thing to do.
I am grateful for the many boys and men that have been influenced for good because of the BSA.  It has a rich heritage. I am grateful for the leadership principles that stand in all situations that were being taught through this venue.  Those who attended are better for the experience and now have a whole toolbox of tools and information that they can use in many situations - family, work, church...  I am grateful for all that I received by attending and making an effort to be present and engaged in the process.  I hope I can always seize the moment and make the most of it. I know we are blessed as we seek for knowledge by study and by faith.

Lake Powell vacation 2019

When we get a chance to get a common consensus about a vacation destination, it is always super easy.  We go to Lake Powell on a houseboat with a couple of speed boats and all the family we can gather.  It is such a fun time for everyone -young and old.  We swim, fish, boat, canoe, float, get dragged behind a boat on a tube or skis or knee board or wake board

Early mornings are peaceful and calm and oh so beautiful.  Because the pictures came on in random order, I'll just tell you a little about what you might see and what it is like for us.  We spent Tuesday through Saturday at the Lake.  Isaac brought Kianna and William brought his father.  The rest were my own posterity but missing Dane, Erica and Terry in Tennessee.  We keep things simple and each prepare a couple of meals for the group. The water and boats are the main entertainment but Elise also brought embroidery floss to make bracelets and anklets. Reading, napping, playing games and snacking are also popular activities.
The last night we have a dance on the lower deck while all the little ones are sleeping.  Isaac and Kianna decorated with beach towels and candles to keep the bugs away and Isaac brought the music.  We had fun dancing and ended it all with leg wrestling.  It was so fun.  Apparently Emily and Rachel are the champions for this year but there may be some challenge rounds ahead.

Each night a family took their turn for a family devotional.  We enjoyed discussion about The Family, a Proclamation, Come Follow Me lessons and conference talks.  This may have been one of my favorit things to do as a family as testimonies were shared and then we knelt together in family prayer.
